Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to your desired level of comfort. Some clients prefer to be completely undressed, while others prefer to keep their undergarments on. This is completely up to you. You will undress and dress in the privacy of the therapist’s room and will be securely covered by a sheet and blanket.

How will I be covered during a session?

In the state of North Carolina it is unlawful to do massage without drapes. Drapes are sheets that keep the client covered. You will be properly covered or draped to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed. No areas will be exposed without your consent. You should always let your therapist know if you are uncomfortable for any reason during your massage.

Do you charge extra for cupping or other modalities?

No, there is no extra charge for cupping or other modalities (hot stone, stretching, etc.). I believe in client-centered sessions, and it is my goal to customize a session that provides you with the most relief possible.

Will the massage hurt?

Overall, massage should not be painful. It all depends on the type of massage that is given and the technique/pressure given by the therapist. The therapist will work with what the client is feeling and what the client is experiencing.  There are ways to massage without pain, although there are some modalities that may cause discomfort and pain.  Discomfort or pain indicates that there are adhesions of tissue fibers and muscles that are bundled up together and are creating a lack of oxygen. Full communication from the client to therapist can help modify the session to where the client feels less pain and more comfort along with relaxation.

How often should I receive a massage?

For those who use massage as preventative care or to manage daily stress, one massage a month is common. Bi-weekly or weekly sessions may be desirable if you are receiving massage for injury relief or to relieve chronic tightness that is interfering with your daily life. There are many people who incorporate massage therapy at least twice a month for optimal therapeutic relief.

When should I not get a massage?

You will need to reschedule your massage if you are actively sick, have a fever, or have any type of contagious skin condition. If you have systematic inflammation, massage may not be appropriate. If you have an acute injury, massage may still be safe, but the area of inflammation may need to be avoided. You can always contact me for more information if you’re unsure.

What does a massage therapist license mean?

A license means that a massage therapist has met the requirements to legally practice massage in our state. To obtain a license in North Carolina, a massage therapist must complete a minimum number of 650 training hours at a NC Board approved school, pass the MBLEx (standardized test), and must undergo a full criminal background check prior to receiving that license.
